Teach-the-Teacher 2021/2022
The Smarter Hospital Foundation and A Helping Hand Foundation have jointly developed a project to continue the Education Journey for the 5 Primary and 1 Secondary schools in Yele, Sierra Leone. This project has been submitted to Wilde Ganzen and approved as one of the projects that Wilde Ganzen will support in 2021/2022.
The aim of this project is to bring the education for all schools in the Yele region in Sierra Leone, being five primary schools and one secondary school, to a level that is necessary to:
- increase the chances of pupils to successfully complete primary school;
- increase the number of students who pass the WASSCE or West African Senior School Certificate Examination;
- increase the number of students who move on to further education.
This means that the teachers of these schools will be retrained, computer and science education will be introduced in order to provide better education.
Target audience
Of the 34,000 inhabitants of Yele and the surrounding area, about 2,500 children are enrolled in the five primary schools and about 1,000 students in secondary school. A total of 3,500 children belong to the direct target group of this project.
All teachers of the schools concerned will receive additional training in teaching skills. This concerns 52 primary school teachers and 50 secondary school teachers. A total of 102 teachers belong to the direct target group.
Detail Project
The project will be carried out during a full school year, in order to ensure that the results take root optimally. The objective has been translated into a multidisciplinary approach with the following three components. We would like to have completed parts A, B and C before the start of the school year in September 2021. Part D, further training of the teachers, will continue throughout the school year, so until September 2022.
In addition, one teacher from each school will participate in the computer training that is part of this project.
A. Construction of energy supply at the SDA Secondary School based on solar panels
This will ensure a stable energy supply for the computer room.
B. Purchase of computer equipment and training of teachers in the use of ICT in education At the SDA Secondary School, only one teacher is well acquainted with the operation of computers. However, there is no computer lab. In order to give substantive lessons to the students, more teachers must have ICT skills and be able to teach them. That is why the SDA Secondary School will be provided with a solid computer room, which the primary schools can also use. The room will be equipped with 20 computers for education, including a beamer, printers and internet connection. One teacher from each school will be trained in hardware and software. The courses are structured as follows: 36 days (spread over three months) training in hardware, including: – Introduction to hardware components, being the computer, printer and network equipment – Introduction to Operating Systems – Computer Setup and Printers – Troubleshooting – Introduction to Networking During six months in-depth training in programs such as Windows, Word and Excel.
C. Digital education for the pupils of the 5 primary schools in Yele
Based on a mobile computer solution containing solar panels for power supply for laptop and projector. The laptop contains specific education software that can be used without a continuous internet connection.
D. In-service training of teachers (‘Teach the teachers’)
During one whole school year, teachers and voluntary school counselors of the five primary schools and the SDA secondary school will be trained in the Quality Educational Program (QEP) in which pedagogical training for more effective and respectful education is central. One of the points of attention concerns the stimulation of educational participation and the development of girls’ talents. To this end, we work together with EducAid, a British Sierra Leonean educational institute with a teacher training program that is implemented at national level.
